The Misfit
The short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” ultimately revolves around two characters: The Misfit, an intelligent man who does evil things, and the Grandmother, a self-centered manipulator. What pretzel logic must be used to come to the conclusion that the Misfit is the Grandmother’s moral superior? And what does this have to do with Richard III?
Thieves
An essay, written in 1971, describes the irony of a moral system that castigates the hungry for stealing bread but celebrates the master crook. “This person is not your average Poor Joe. In most cases, he already has everything he wants – power, money, prestige. He steals for more power, more money, more prestige.”
